What is Steel?

Steel is a popular metal alloy consisting mostly of iron and some carbon. Other elements are sometimes added, such as manganese, chromium, vanadium, and tungsten.

Modern steelmaking began in 1858 when it became possible to produce large quantities economically. Steel is thermally conductive, highly corrosion-resistant, ductile, and malleable.

Applications:

Ø Automobile Parts

Ø Aircraft Components

Ø Construction Equipment

Ø Machine Tooling

Ø Crankshafts

Advantages:

Ø Ductile-Ductility is the measure of how much a material can be plastically deformed by elongation, without fracture.

Ø Recyclable-No different than most metals, scrapped mild steel is vital in the production of more of the same.

Ø Weldable-Unlike high-carbon steel, mild steel can be coalesced with far greater ease. Due to the specific properties of the metal, electric currents travel through it without distorting the 'make-up' of the material.
